UK recovery in state of paralysis, says ITEM Club forecast

Political uncertainty in the Eurozone has paralysed the UK recovery, according to the latest quarterly forecast from the Ernst & Young ITEM Club, with UK GDP expected to flatline for the rest of year.
ITEM Club’s winter forecast says that deteriorating levels of confidence will see business investment stagnate in 2012, whilst export prospects have already slowed. According to the report, the UK is probably already in a technical recession and will struggle to reach positive growth until 2013.
The report forecasts UK GDP of 0.2% this year before increasing to 1.8% in 2013 and 2.8% in 2014.
UK back in recession
Professor Peter Spencer, chief economic advisor to the Ernst & Young ITEM Club explains: “Figures for the last quarter of 2011 and the first quarter of this year are likely to show that we are back in recession and we are going to have to wait until this summer before there are any signs of improvement. But it’s not going to be a repeat of 2009; we are not going to see a serious double dip.
“This time around, UK PLCs have strong balance sheets and have built up large cash stockpiles, which will provide a useful insurance policy if the situation deteriorates further. Business spending has already been cut back heavily. However, with business confidence faltering, investment and recruitment are likely to remain on hold until stability returns.”
ITEM Club forecasts that investment fell by 2.6% in 2011 and will grow by just 0.4% in 2012.
Unemployment will approach 3 million
The labour market outlook also remains bleak. According to the report, sluggish levels of private sector recruitment will be unable to offset job losses in the public sector. ITEM says that unemployment will be just shy of the 3 million mark in the first half of 2013, representing 9.3% of the UK’s labour force.
Spencer comments: “We are expecting to see another 300,000 unemployed this year, which is relatively modest when compared to the increase in 2009, but this is adding to an already lengthy dole queue.
“The only piece of good news for UK households is that inflation should fall back below 2% this year, as commodity prices weaken and the VAT rise drops out of the calculation. We will have a bit of extra cash in our pockets, but concerns over rising unemployment are unlikely to see consumers rushing back out onto the high street.”
ITEM says that disposable incomes will decline by 0.8% this year, whilst consumer spending will remain flat before picking up by 1.4% in 2013 as employment prospects brighten and inflation remains low.
Exports still hold the key to UK’s recovery
According to the report, the UK’s recovery is still heavily dependent on exports. Exports accounted for most of last year’s growth, adding 0.9 percentage points to GDP in 2011, but with weakening demand from the Eurozone and concerns over China’s ability to soft land their economy, the outlook for 2012 looks much less promising.
ITEM is predicting export growth of 3% this year, which will add 0.4 percentage points to UK GDP. But this will be dependent on the UK’s ability to continue to re-orient exports away from the Eurozone to the rapid growth markets, such as India and Indonesia.
Martin Cook, commercial managing partner at Ernst & Young, comments: “Many UK companies rely heavily on their Eurozone trading partners but this is no time for ‘business as usual’; they will need to adapt, assess their long term business models and be prepared to tap into new markets.
“Corporates need to start planning for different scenarios, as no-one really knows how the Eurozone crisis is going to play out. Doing nothing is simply not an option.”
But significant risks remain
Spencer concludes: “There’s a lot hanging in the balance. Our forecast is based on the assumption that the Euro remains intact and that policymakers are able to contain the Eurozone crisis. However, the longer the uncertainty continues, the more debilitating the impact will be on the UK’s economic prospects.”

My dog had an ACL injury 1 years and 3 days after his first one (which is required by the policy), Pet Plan “denied” the claim due to a date input error on their staffs part showing it was prior to the one year requirement. They also covered them self by saying he hurt his ACL due to the signs of arthritis he has experienced in the past, which caused my vet to about wet his pants laughing. The vet wrote a letter telling them their excuse for denying the claim was ridiculous and that the signs of arthritis was no way a cause of the ACL injury. I sent all the required documents for an appeal to Pet Plan on December 23, 2011, received an email shortly thereafter telling me that all documents have been received and cases are resolved in 2-4 weeks. Here I sit 8 weeks later with no resolution, yet when you call them and their hold music makes you feel all warm and fuzzy stating “they will not abandon you or your pet in your time of need”. Yeah right! I would highly recommend NOT using Pet Plan for your pet insurance. Find someone else, I am going to.

@Theagenthollyhock By System I mean Monetary System, which is inherently courrpt , and rewards courrpt behavior. It has decoupled humanity from the physical world, it is what makes us systemically engage in destructive behavior and exploitation. And it transfers wealth from the poor to the rich. You get paid for being rich , without any contribution to society. You pay for being poor. We are destroying the environment we live in for monetary gain. It was never workable.

This is an issue that has been the subject of much dbetae through the decades. There is some evidence on both sides. At least one radar outpost did detect the incoming invasion. Whether they mis-interpreted it as US aircraft inbound to Hickham or a US Navy exercise has been dbetaed significantly. The Japanese ambassador to the US was to deliver a declaration of war to Congress and the White House. This was actually delivered after the attack due to scheduling snafus on the Japanese side and a dismissive attitude towards to Japanese ambassador.Modern military doctrine holds it unthinkable that the entire fleet would be in one place at one time, rendering it as a sitting duck. Admiral Husband Kimmel, chief of the naval fleet at Pearl Harbor was implicated in the attack for this reason but was never punished. He demanded trial by Court Martial to clear his name but this never occurred. The repercussions of Pearl Harbor essentially killed off his Naval career. Whether he had information that would have implicated the Roosevelt administration in the attack that would have become public knowledge at trial or whether he was simply a scape-goat for the administration are unknown though there is much speculation on both sides there.Roosevelt knew that US involvement in WWII was inevitable and necessary to stop the advance of both Hitler and Hirohito. However there was a strong popular isolationist feeling in the US at that time. The peace movement of the 1930s and very early 1940s made the peace movement of the Vietnam era look tame by comparison. Most Americans wanted no part of either an Asian or European war, feeling that it was their problem, not ours. The allegation has been made that Roosevelt either tacitly allowed Pearl Harbor to occur by ignoring intelligence information that indicated it was eminent (sound familiar?) or that even worse, he ordered the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor (as an impossible to ignore target for Japan) under the cover of classified orders that remain classified to this day. The third theory of course is that the administration and the Navy were both too stupid (or cocky) to believe that there was a viable threat (sound familiar again?) and that lead to the attack. The results of the attack are pretty clear. The US immediately became involved in both theaters, simultaneously declaring war on Japan (for the attack) and Germany (who had a treaty with Japan) and bringing the US into the fray. The attack immediately galvanized American feelings towards the war effort as a victim of imperialist aggression. There has been much speculation as to whether the US would have ever entered WWII without the attack on Pearl Harbor though most military historians agree that it would have been inevitable. About the only issues in contention are when and would it have been soon enough. If the US entry had only been delayed a few months it’s likely that the outcome would have been the same. However had the US waited until Britain fell to Hitler probably in late 1942 or early 1943 or so the outcome could have been far different. We would not have had a base in Europe to launch the attacks on the German war machine, at least without liberating England first. That would have been an extremely difficult task by any military measure. Had that given Hitler enough time to complete his heavy water experiments and complete his own nuclear weapons development program, all of Europe would have fallen as would have the Soviet Union and very possibly the US as well. Some theorize that the US may have been able to muster sufficient defense to prevent an invasion of the US mainland or at least forestall it long enough for us to complete the Manhattan Project it’s very likely that WWI would have escalated into a significant nuclear exchange between the US and the Axis forces. Germany didn’t have any long-range bombers that could have delivered that to the US mainland, at least in the early to mid 1940s but if they had successfully invaded England (and some say, honored the pact with Stalin) there’s little doubt that they would have had the time to develop such a platform. And had they advanced their rocket expertise to inter-continental range or developed a successful mid-range sea-launched missile there’s little doubt that DC would have been a target as would have much of the US’ industrial base and financial centers. And had they shared that technology with Japan, we could have had nuclear strikes raining down from both coasts. I shudder to think what the outcome of such a calamitous situation would have been.

Have had this company on 2 sepetare times within a 7-8 week period ~ Addressing the drainage problem which was the cause of our flooding in our lower family room and other rooms adjoined to it ~ I’ll spare you of what the problem was and that it was all taken care of but we had to have them out again. The second time Jemo was the service man and he couldn’t of been more courteous, accomodating and a delight. He took his time assessing the problem ~ there was no charge as the previous work that was done had a 6 month guarantee. The intial charge was $370.00 which would have been fine if the problem was taken care of then; but it wasn’t ~ but after Jemo it is just fine now.
